Limekiln Canyon Park: Natural Water Features and Shaded Trails!

Discover this local gem in Porter Ranch, CA! Frogs, water, shade...what more could you ask for?

By Danielle Duckett September 10, 2024

A few weekends ago, we decided to take a little family adventure to Limekiln Canyon Park in Porter Ranch with our two boys, Easton and Lincoln. This trailhead is on one of our normal drives and we've passed it at least 50 times, always with the thought that we'll get there eventually. We finally made it, and let me tell you, it’s a perfect spot for families looking to escape the hustle of the city and enjoy nature. The trailhead is on Rinaldi Street and it's as if you're transported into a quiet serene forest just steps into the "hike."

Lincoln, who’s always on the lookout for anything that hops or crawls, was absolutely delighted when we came across a few frogs along the way. Watching him and Easton crouch down in excitement, pointing out the frogs hiding near the water’s edge, was such a fun moment. They were so thrilled and couldn't wait to explore more!

A major perk to the trail is the natural shade with trees lining a large part of the path. Towering redwoods and pines created a cool canopy, making it feel like we were walking through a peaceful, hidden world. Easton and Lincoln loved running ahead on the path. On a scale of easy to difficult, this is a very easy and manageable trail for kids of all ages. We saw babies in backpacks, toddlers, and older kids running. There are a couple of spots with very slight incline, but they're over before you even know it. And the trail itself isn't very long.

The sound of trickling water greets you fairly early on in the hike, but as you follow the stream, you're to a stunning waterfall. The boys were so excited to send leaf boats down it. We even found a shallow swimming hole before the waterfall. Easton was all for wading in, and Lincoln followed closely behind, splashing around like it was the best pool day ever.

Watching the boys play, explore, and embrace the natural world around them was a beautiful reminder of why we love getting out as a family. Knowing this trail is literally minutes away from our home is so exciting and the perfect way to beat some of this end of summer heat we're getting. I was shocked at how much water there was during this season, and I'm excited to see how it changes throughout the seasons ahead.

We left Limekiln Canyon Park with tired feet, happy hearts, and two very muddy boys who are already asking when we’ll return. 10/10 would recommend to anyone!
